| The moat at Rayleigh Mount, November 2008 |
The moat at Rayleigh Mount is now a haven for wildlife. During the time Rayleigh
Castle was occupied, however, the moat was a dry ditch; it was never intended to be filled with water. Inside the ditch was
an earth rampart topped with wooden stakes, forming a defensive palisade.

| Ashingdon Church, January 2009 |
Ashingdon Church was built to commemorate the battle of Ashingdon fought between the Dane Canute and the Saxon Edmund
Ironside. Canute won the day and became King of England. However, he commissioned this church in memory of all the dead of
the battle. Its first vicar was Stigand, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury and was eventually murdered.
